Responses to Tuffy

Tuffy’s special vest attracted people to us, and they asked why we were there. We were invited to a karaoke gospel sing-along and to a Korean Bible-study group. We attended a sorority prom party that had been planned for over six months.

Everybody was so inquisitive about Tuffy. News spread quickly. When the students got to know us, they sent text messages or called each other to notify others of our location. Wherever we went, we made our presence known first by requesting permission to be there. Everyone was wonderfully receptive and extremely appreciative.

Reflecting back on our experiences, I feel thankful for the immense appreciation kids, teachers, counselors, custodians, first responders, staff, local police, and CISM responders expressed to me in letters, emails, phone calls, and chance conversations. The parents and community residents who were affected directly or indirectly all unequivocally identified one universal theme: Tuffy’s loving presence served as a critical bridge from unbearable sadness and grief to healing. We worked long days and evenings, yet Tuffy never grew tired of offering solace.

We touched many lives in our visits to the classrooms, memorial sites, and memorial services, but I feel that we were even more richly touched. Not a day passes that I don’t recall faces, conversations, and visions of that campus.
